The
MCCS is a two tier system that
covers the thorax, head, neck and
arms.
This system actually exceeded our
expectations when tested. Based on
O.I.F. experience, I think this
represents the most effective means
of controlling heat in a combat
environment. engineered to be worn
under military body armor, combines
state of the art evaporative cooling
and phase change technologies to
reduce heat stress casualties and
enhance mission capability.
The
(MCCS-01) has been assembled into an
Iraq Pack to offer
essential equipment at value
pricing. The pack includes (1) vest
w/phase change inserts, (1) extra
set of phase change inserts, (1)
phase change helmet cooler, (1)
evaporative cooling beanie and (1)
evaporative cooling neck band. The
Iraq pack includes 2 sets of inserts
to provide the cooling duration
required by unit commanders during
the OIF 2004. Additional inserts are
available and recommended for
convenience, though are not
necessary.

The
torso represents the main heatsink
for managing core temperature. The
Level 1 consists of wearing the
evaporative cooling vest, which
soaks and retains water from an
initial soaking to cool for
hours/days but does not wet the
underlying T shirt. This would
likely suffice for cooling (under
BDU/DCU blouse) if armor was not
worn. To control the greatly
increased heat stress from
interceptor OTV armor, add the phase
change packs to the cooling vests
pockets as shown in pictures, they
will maintain a constant temperature
of 58 degrees for 2+ hrs., depending
on ambient temperature. These packs
are relatively lightweight but made
to withstand the extreme abuse of
sand abrasion without leaking.
The head cooling consists of the
Level 1 evaporative cooling beanie
cap, which works comparably to the
vest. For additional cooling the
Level 2 system for the ACH/kevlar
helmet involves properly sized phase
change packs, which go directly into
the helmet. They are best for the
ACH but work equally as well with
the kevlar.
The neck piece, consists of a DCU
evaporative cooling piece. The neck
guard on the interceptor OTV limits
the size of neck cooling equipment.
The OTV quick release (QR) clips
require a one time installation on
the OTV. This requires about 5
minutes and a pocket knife. The QR
clips provide benefits beyond the
cooling application. Please see
photo gallery for detailed
installation instructions. The
benefits of the QR OTV clips are as
follows:
1) allows for exchange of rear packs
while on patrol, without removing
the protective OTV.
2) Allows comfort waist size
adjustments to the OTV while it is
being worn
3) Allows medics much easier access
to covered wounds. Medical providers
from 2/3 Stryker Brigade Combat Team
related some difficulty accessing
soldier's wounds underneath the
standard OTV during their 12 month
OIF tour.
